A freak accident...

A London bus (service 188) was involved in an accident near Tower Hill yesterday, which left 19 wounded and 1 dead. The bus hit a tree and initial reports blamed it on low lying branches.

Subsequently, it became apparent that the driver, for some obscure reasons, had driven the bus into that tree that led to many injuries when the upper deck caved in. Tragically, Emily Diamond, a pedestrian, was hit by a fallen branch and died not long after.

Some infuriated passengers tried attacking the driver through the glass shield. He eventually stumbled out shocked (but otherwise unscathed) and fainted on the spot.

I was of course blissfully unaware of the accident until Sher informed me about it. Funny how fast news in London spread to Croatia. Received an email from Wife, who has always warned me not to sit on the upper bus deck, soon after that.

Though I enjoy the view up there quite abit, I'll probably think twice about climbing up those stairs after this freak accident.

What about you? Are you one of those who would rather have the view than convenience when travelling by buses?

That is a sad story knowing someone died and many were injured. I think the best way we can do is pray for them.

@sass,
There were 9 seriously injured and sent to the hospital. The deceased, Emily Diamond, an estate agent, passed away despite being momentarily resuscitated.

Our condolences to her loved ones.

It is a very sad accident but it wouldn't stop me sitting on the top deck any more than it would stop me crossing a road... Life is full of danger and it can happen just when and where you do not expect it. We didn't give up using the underground after the bombing either!!

@ladybanana,
Life still goes on doesn't it? A few days later, this would have been superceded by other news.

But I think city folks have got this grit about them. The pace of life has quickened to the extent that people just don't get affected that easily.

I thought these double deckers have ceased to function in London???

Anyway, since we don't get to see many double deckers here, I'd love to experience the upper bus deck. Accidents or not, it's destiny. Even you can have a freak accident at home!

This is the second incident this year. The last accident was a bus driving into a low bridge.

My friend was sitting downstairs at the time, he said the driver didn't follow the sign to drive in the middle of the arch.

I like to sit on the upper deck. :P
It's not crowded and the view is good.

@kyh,
I think the double deckers that you were referring to belong to the "Routemaster" series.

Ken Livingstone, the previous Mayor, removed them from the roads citing pollution and disable unfriendliness.

Double decker buses are essential in cities with high population density. There're a number of those 'bendy' buses here as well but those aren't exactly popular with the locals.

Well, take solace in the fact that Penang has not become so crowded that double deckers are necessary. Otherwise, the lovely island would be marred by the crowds. :)

@andrew,
It's really suprising how close these things cut. Perhaps they should be looking at banning double decks along these routes...

@ecl,
I realised that rowdy students prefer the upper decks as well. Hmm... they can be quite a nuisance though...

Parden my ignorance, but is wife a person's name or are you refering to your wife?

I have stopped sitting on the upper deck unless I'm not alone.

I was mugged once on the bus at 1am in the night travelling home from work on a bus from Tottenham (Hackney). Two black boys (on drugs on something) snatched my mobile and ran down the bus. (There was no one else on the upper deck.) Got my mobile back cos some kind stranger on the street caught on the guy. I suffered several scratches (robber pushed me onto the pavement) and was totally in shock!!!

@wenbin,
lol, she's my wife of course!

Wife, if you're reading this. I was refering to you.

Eh, Wenbin... you'll get me into trouble. Haha...

@sher.
Ok, let me get this straight. Your phone was stolen by two chaps, whom I assumed were larger than you, and you chased them off the bus at 1am in the morning...???

Either you're very courageous or you're too tired to think. I mean, they could have very well turned around and stabbed you...

Anyway, thanks gosh that it turned out well for you.
