Taking a break.

Will be taking a short break from blogging for a couple of days as I'm taking advantage of the May Bank Holiday for a short trip to Rome.

LadyBanana lamented over the fact that there are indeed less Bank Holidays (or public holidays) in my earlier post. Actually, Britons do get some reprive from an unlikely source - NHS (National Health Service).

Unlike Singapore's health system, that in the UK (NHS) is fully subsidised by the taxpayers. As a result of which, one cannot just walk into a public clinic for a consultation, unless you are willing to fork out a tiny fortune for a private doctor.

Also unlike Singapore where one will have to go get a medical certificate (from a GP of course) if she decided to skip the day at work, Britons (and most Europeans I'm told) are allowed to self certify their own sick leave for a total of 7 days a year. Simply call the office that very day and you can recuperate at home for the day.

I'm not saying that people are abusing the system. But if you're feeling abit under the weather, staying away from work is not as complicated (and inconvenient) as back home.

I'm off for my break now. Do check back this space sometime next mid-week. Cheers!

Wow, Rome. Enjoy your holiday.

About the medical leave, I think the employers in our part of the world don't trust the staff that much.

In fact you can self certify for the first seven days of each illness, not just seven days a year.

I'm allowed 20 paid sick days per year, but I'm a good healthy worker (thankfully) and rarely take them :)

Hope you've had a good time in Rome - I've never been there...

@eaststopper,
Monsieur? No, no... it's senor.. or at least that's what it sounded like. :)

@eastcoastlife,
Well, look at it this way... the locals envy you for being so close to Bali, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia... all of which popular tropical destinations. lol

@erica
I enjoyed Rome, most of it anyway. Thanks!

@lina
I don't know about that. I like to think that we tend to rely on the 'expert' opinion of doctors more.

Also, doctors over here don't really fancy prescribing antibiotics, very much unlike that in Singapore.

@ladybanana,
Really? You mean to say that the number of paid sick leave allowed per year is dictated by the employer?

Hmm... perhaps I'm shortchanged then... :0

@normadic matt
Thanks Matt! I did. :)

@j_erialc
Thanks for your kind words. I'm honoured to be linked at your site. Cheers!
