A trebuchet demonstration - Tower of London

Was feasting on my Pret sandwich during lunch the other day as I was strolling beside the Tower of London. when I saw the live demonstration of a trebuchet, more popularly known as the catapult. Though I'm sure the two devices here are very different but let's not go into the technicalities here, shall we?

Anyway, they got burly men dressed up as medieval soldiers who entertained some tourists in what used to be the moat of the Tower, which has since been drained. Those soldiers looked pretty bored and by the look of their faces, they could have been standing behind the fish n chips' counter.

Apparently, the device was supposed to send a projectile across the length of the moat and hit a target (not in picture), which was easily 50m away.

I spent my entire lunchtime watching the process and when I left 45min later, the two bored looking soldiers were still explaining the mechanism to the dwindling crowd. Darn, should have walked across the Tower Bridge...

cool! did they just show how the thing work or can you do some damage with the catapult? :D
Would be great if one can smash things with that device.

@my bug life,
Oh yah it is... only if you're not at the receiving end. Was watching Kingdom of Heaven the other day and Saladin (in the show) did use it... rather extensively. :)

@ecl,
You mean while stuffing myself with the Pret sandwich? lol

No, I stood along the bank of the 'moat' and watched from afar...

@lina,
It was meant to... but I ran out of time so didn't get to see whether they actually did fire that shot, which they armed.

What's a "prets sandwich"? From googling I'm guessing it's from a store that only sells sandwiches?

@turnip,
Pret's a chain store in the UK that sells primarily sandwich. They have soups and drinks as well. But I normally head directly towards the sandwich counter... and always for the chicken avocado sandwich. I'm a sucker for avocado. :)
