Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) - London's pancake races begin!

The Filthy Lawyers glared at the Police, sneering and egging them on. The Police saw it as a chance to show the lawyers who's the boss. The HMRC (the equivalent of Inland Revenue back home) seemed a little shaky but nevertheless determined to go down fighting.

No, the City of London is not rioting and it's definitely not a clash between the good and the evil though some might argue who's on which side. After all the time spent flipping pancakes and choosing a good size pan, the tussle for the Pancake Race champion of 2009 is on.

As mentioned in my previous post there were a couple of races in the City. Braving the gathering storm clouds, I managed to make my way to the Pancake race at Tower Hill Terrace. Fortunately for the almost two hundred strong spectators, the weather held. Many went with their SLRs and some (me included) clinging tightly to their trusty autofocus cameras.

Not only the lawyers, police and the tax collectors, staff from the nearby offices formed groups of four came with their aprons and personalised pans. Some came prepared with trainers while others were in their swanky shirts, ties and even dresses.

Alas, and so England fell to South Africa...

The rules are simple. Each of the four members of the team was to run a distance of approximately 30m with a pancake in a pan. Each runner has to flip the pancake at least once without dropping it on the floor. At no time must the pan be used as a weapon… seriously.

Here are some photos of the racers in action. By the way, the lawyers beat the police but it was a neck to neck.

If you enjoy the post, consider Stumbling it or Mixx it. Cheers!

Ha! This is interesting. So what do they get for winning or was it just for the fun of it and excuse to get out of the office? ;)

I think the lawyers probably won on a technicality.
