I could definitely use one of those heat packs over here in Germany! Last winter I bought the 'click and heat' variety which are based on a chemical reaction...they don't last very long, and then you have the hassle of re-heating them in a pot of hot water to be able to re-use them!

There used to be hand warmers that consisted of a live burning element in a container a biut like a short hardcase spectacle holder. It lasted for around two hours They worked well but they smelt terrible from the fuems that were let off.

When I was young, we used these when we went skiing - only when we went skiing. It surprised me to see them all over the place in the winter when I came to Japan.

When i as in japan years ago, as a student Iknew about these packs, but I always thought they were too expensive since you canonly use them once then you have to throw them away. Instead, I would buy to cans of hot coffee out of the vending machines and when they started to cool down Iwould drink them or take them home to drnk later. lol lol I love the taste of Mr Coffee canned coffee too. yes they do have stuff like this in UK.. and that's the good old fashion hot water bottle which uses just hot water (or from the hot tap if you have very hot ones!). I think they are ever so slightly more eco friendly than the one-use instant ones, as there's no chemicals, no waste after, though it does takes a little fuel to heat up the water. Saying that, I must admit I do have some of these

A few years ago a group of us were in China in winter, and one of us forgot she had such a heat pack in her pocket and put in a (wrapped and sealed) piece of chocolate. No prizes for guessing what happened next. :P But I think she managed to get it back by taking it out and letting it solidify.

Just checked in my store of winter thingys n found 2 heart-shaped hot compress. I hv never used them but I gather than my hubby got them from one of his trips to finland.<BR/><BR/>It's getting colder now. I'm piling on the blankets. At some point it would be time for the feather-light downs blanket.

A friend gave me a whole stack of those b4 I left for my 2 week trip. Not used to the cold esp at nite, about 8 to 10 degrees, so they came in useful having one in each pocket. They worked, and stayed warm for up to 12 hours.
